This infographic put together with information collected by OnlineUniversities.com shows insight into the American e-book market. Although some of the percentages might seem small they do show a clear increase and proof that the e-market is growing.
Printed books are still the top choice for readers but those who read using an electronic device are reportedly spending more time reading. It also takes a look at which devices readers are using most.
Do you read e-books? Which device do you have? Is your book available in print, e-format or both?

My zombie novel: Julie Rayzor, Romance Adventure, Zombies will be on kindle and trade paper on August 1st. I have kindle and ibooks for an iphone but I don't buy many books. I still buy a lot of used books and I love the feel of the paper and the aroma or smell of old paper. I'm not opposed to ebooks though, I just don't want to spend $100plus for one.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't be surprised if you see audiobooks on youtube now or very soon. I've even made a video trailer for my zombie novel and it's on youtube. Julie Rayzor: www.youtube.com/watch?v=joKyRye_ZyQ
Firstly, congrats on your book coming out Richard. Zombies seem to be big news this year so I'm sure you'll do well.
DeleteI love finding a gem at a used book market. I once found a few novels by Dean Koontz at just 10p each and felt like I'd won the lottery (he's one of my favourite writers).
I've recorded a video reading of my children's book 'Out and About at the Zoo' and uploaded it to YouTube (http://youtu.be/EUrGya2HS50) I've seen other authors post readings from their books too so the start of audio books on YouTube has already begun to a certain extent. I can definitely see this trend taking off even more in the future.
I have a Kindle (won it so didn't cost me anything) and most of the books I put on there are the freebie offerings from Ereader News Today or the 99 cent books when I find a book I really like. I refuse to pay over $4 or so for an ebook secondary to the lack of overhead to publish and ebook (don't believe the big publishers that there is a messload of overhead to design an ebook). I haven't read as many paperbacks since winning the kindle last year but my middle grade/YA paranormal mystery, FINALLY HOME, is available in both print and ebook and is available for all ereaders through smashwords (and is half price for the month of July - only $1.50) as well as directly on Nook and Kindle. I've read more on my Kindle in a year and almost half than I normally would have if still reading paperbacks - E :)

I think it makes sense that an author makes sure their books are available in all formats as readers tastes vary and an increasing number are using electronic devices these days.
DeleteI have an ipad but I still prefer to read print especially for novels.
As far as price goes, a lot of e-books are offered at low prices, like the 99 cents books you mention, and this can have a positive effect on their sales as it makes them available to a larger range of budgets. I have mixed feelings about e-book prices though as the same amount of work has gone into writing and editing the book as it would have been for a print book and so I think that the author should be compensated accordingly with the same royalty per sale.
