Twitter Facts & Figures 2014

Twitter is one of the most misunderstood social media networks but also one of the most powerful. There is so much more to it than just 140 character posts too. The site has (and is still) undergoing lots of changes since the company went public last November and it putting more and more emphasis on visual content. There are also lots of apps that give you plenty of options for the types of content you can share.

It's also one of the easiest, and least time consuming, social media sites you can use. Given it's "in a nut shell" post length, the more to the point you can be the better. As it's such a high traffic site you can also recycle content without it annoying your followers like it might on say Facebook. You can easily schedule tweets to post automatically so you don't need to actually be on site all day to maintain a strong presence. Third party sites like SocialOomph, TweetDeck, and HootSuite are popular examples.

Then there's the hashtag. The hashtag was originally used on Twitter and proved so popular that it soon spread to other social media sites too. The little # symbol used before keywords makes searching a whole lot easier and quicker. This makes it simple to join chats, connect with others with similar interests and grow your network. It also has benefits from a marketing point of view as readers can easily find you and your projects by using your hashtags e.g. if you're doing a virtual book tour or maybe you have one set up specifically for your book.
