Interview with Jill Amy Rosenblatt

Who are your favourite authors?
Two of my favorite authors are Daniel Silvia and Margaret Atwood. Daniel Silva writes the Gabriel Allon spy series. His books are so exciting; you become invested with the characters. Margaret Atwood’s book, The Handmaid’s Tale, is one of my absolute favorite books. You become so emotionally attached to the character and her experience. After I first read it, I couldn’t stop thinking about it for a long time after.
What's your favourite quote about writing/for writers?
“We are all apprentices in a craft where no one ever becomes a master.” Ernest Hemingway. I love that. It always reminds me that every day is a challenge to work to be better.
What's the best thing about being a writer?
The best thing about being a writer is letting your imagination roam freely and seeing what happens. It’s an amazing process that I still can’t quite explain. As a writer, you spend a tremendous amount of time thinking about your characters; what they say, how they feel. Then one day it seems like your characters decide to take over and tell their own story. It’s fun to see how it works out.

Why do you think readers are going to enjoy your book?

I think readers will like The Fixer series because it’s fast-paced and I keep the plot moving. I introduce several new supporting characters in The Killing Kind and they all have their own personality type and motivations. I also think readers will like continuing this journey with Katerina, watching her try to deal with her own sense of ethics as she faces tougher choices.

How long did it take you to write your book?

It took about fourteen months to complete the entire process. I would like to be on a twelve month schedule for each book in the series but it looks like it will be fourteen.

Who designed the cover?

Alan Gaites of Graphic Design has done the cover designs for both books. He just finished the cover for book 3, The Last Romanov, and it looks awesome. Alan does amazing work and I enjoy collaborating with him.


How do you research your books?

I love research and I like to look up everything, even the smallest details, just to make sure I’m as accurate as possible. There are a number of wonderful people who have been very kind to talk to me and give me technical advice for this book.

What is your work in progress? Tell us about it.

I’m working on book three of The Fixer series, The Fixer: The Last Romanov. Katerina Mills moves around a bit in this book and gets out of New York City. She will be visiting Vermont, Florida, and California. But just because she’s away from the city doesn’t mean she will be able to escape the problems and dangers she left behind there. She has a new assignment but there are old enemies that still pose a threat.

What are your thoughts on self-publishing verses traditional publishing?

This series is my first experiment with self-publishing and I’m enjoying it. But I don’t think I would have been able to do this if I hadn’t gone the traditional publishing route with the first two books I wrote, Project Jennifer, and For Better or Worse. Those experiences really taught me what the process should be; from writing, to editing, to copyediting, grammar checks and so forth. Traditional publishing gave me a guide to follow to make sure I’m looking at everything carefully before publishing.


Does your family support you in your writing career? How?

My mother is incredibly supportive of my writing career. She has always been my first reader and she is wonderful at editing. She always tells me the truth and challenges me by being honest if she thinks something in the story isn’t working.


When you’re not writing, how do you spend your time?

I’m usually writing all the time! I’m a bit of a workaholic but I do make time during ice hockey season to watch as many games as I can. I am a huge NY Rangers fan so I make time to support my team.

    I read this book, and as the author states, I can confirm it was definitely a fast- paced suspense. Glad to see that I can look forward to the next book in this series!!!!
