7 Things I Have Learned Thus Far as an Indie Author

7 Things I Have Learned Thus Far as an Indie Author, guest post by Kimberlee Ann Bastian

Contrary to what the world might tell you, there is not a wrong or right way to create a story. Of course, there are some rules, and while rules can be broken, for a debut you’ll need to follow every last one. Or you’re a complete genius and if so, I applaud you for your brilliance. I have no doubt it will be an instant masterpiece.

For the rest of us, and I include myself in this, there are some things I have learned that I can impart from my experience thus far as an Indie Author.

- If you want to be an author know why at the start of your journey and what you want to build towards. Have your “I’ve made it moment” in mind and be honest with yourself.

- Be prepared to live in two worlds. The “real” one and the one you are building. Be sure to find balance between them.

7 Things I Have Learned Thus Far as an Indie Author, guest post by Kimberlee Ann Bastian- In becoming an Indie Author you need to realize that it’s more than just writing a book. You will have to wear many hats: web designer, social media butterfly, promoter, brand designer, just to name a few. Or you can hire people to do this all for you, which then you become a coordinator of your chosen team.

- Speaking of a team, be sure to have a network of people you trust that you can bounce ideas off of and who will support you as you pen your creation.

- The investment needed to become an Indie Author is equivalent to owning your own business and you are the CEO. Know your budget, but also now how much you are willing to risk. If it helps, Disney wasn’t built on the first try.

- Know that the journey to becoming an author will be a rollercoaster of emotions and that as much as you believe it is taking far too long to complete your journey, know that it is taking the amount of time that it should.

- As Thomas Edison once said, “Many of life’s failures, are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.”

Lastly, if it is in your heart, your soul, and your mind to be an author, with a well-laid out plan, determination, and an entrepreneurial drive you have all the power you need to be one.

Kimberlee Ann Bastian has a unique love affair with American nostalgia, mythology, and endless possibilities. This melting pot of elements is what prompted the creation of her epic ELEMENT ODYSSEYS series, starting with the reboot of her debut novel now titled THE BREEDLING AND THE CITY IN THE GARDEN.

When she is not in her writer's room, working her current "day job", or consuming other literary worlds, she enjoys hiking and cycling around the bluffs of your Southeastern MN home and catching up on her favorite pop culture.
