I recently had the delightful
experience of using an author Newsletter to become a #1 Amazon Best-Seller.
Learning how to write an author newsletter has been a bit of a learning curve,
but a fun experience as well.
I discovered that not everyone uses
social media. Many of the people that signed up for my newsletter in fact
despise social media, and have nothing to do with Facebook, Twitter, etc.. The other thing I noticed is that unlike
social media, your information will not be missed. It will be sitting in your subscriber’s
inbox until they are ready to look at it.

Most of the early subscribers to my newsletter were friends and family. They
want to support you in your endeavors. I sent them a link to my website from my
own personal email so they would be familiar with it. I had a very simple signup
page on my website. New subscribers simply had to enter their first name and
email address. I made sure my website domain name was consistent with the email
they would be receiving. An easy to remember and catchy title works best. I used
my first name so my family and friends would not immediately disregard the
email. For example, my website is LaughingAtMyself.lol,
so I used the email Yvonne@laughingatmyself.lol.
Another way to get early subscribers is
to engage people you already know. If you attend meetings or conferences,
create an appealing book sell sheet attached to an email signup sheet to pass
around. You can then ask these subscribers to engage their friends and family
by forwarding the email or sharing your website.
It helps to offer an incentive. I
offered a free chapter of my book to all subscribers of my newsletter. I also
used text messages to direct people to my website signup page. Be sure to
immediately thank people for signing up. It is tempting to put a lot of
information on the newsletter, but it is important to keep it to one topic.
If you have a book launch coming up, it works to get people excited about it.
Start promoting the launch date early. Get your subscribers involved in
promoting your book. They want to share in your success. Send a newsletter a
week before the launch, a day before, and the day of the launch with a link to
purchase your book. Write about progress, upcoming events or exciting news.
This will generate pre-orders and get people to feel like they are a part of
your success. I sent a newsletter out when my book hit #1 Amazon Best-seller
and that generated even more subscribers. Even though creating your own author
newsletter can seem daunting at first, the results are well worth it. It may
even be fun. You never know how far it can reach. Think of it as another creative outlet.
