What genre do you write and why?
Right now, I am in the “thriller” category but, plan on branching out to science fiction down the road and have a nice little queue of projects that I'm working on. While I will read almost anything, those are probably my favorites. I want my readers to have a deeper understanding of certain issues and to also be entertained by my books.
Tell us about your latest book.
“Black and White” is my first novel. It is about a young woman who is brutally raped and stalked. It is a bit extreme but, the book is based on true events that occurred when I was raped at the age of 19 and stalked at the age of 20. Sadly, this is very common for many young women and people need to be made aware. While my book character ultimately gets justice, I didn't in the traditional sense. So, this book was a way to do that. My book deals with a lot of feminist issues- especially violence against women. This book is more of a prequel to an ongoing series. However, I like to think of my books similar to how you can look at Law and Order: SVU in the fact that you can read the books alone or in order and still get them.
What marketing methods are you using to promote your book?
I'm still researching. Right now, mostly Twitter, Facebook (personal), and trying to get as much press as possible. I'm a full time student and do freelance work so, it's hard to find time to market my book in other ways.
What formats is the book available in?
It can be found on Book Country (formats: MOBI, PDF, and EPUB), Nook, Scribd, Google Play, Google Books, and Amazon Kindle in thirteen countries. Hopefully, it will continue to spread and distribute!
Who are your favourite authors?
Stephen King, Suzanne Collins, and J.K. Rowling
What advice do you have for other writers?
Just go for it. Plan a bit but, just write it. I don't spend much time editing and try to be efficient when I write. I also have notebooks of ideas to develop and plan on doing it.
What's your favourite quote about writing/for writers?
Not sure.
What's the best thing about being a writer?
I get to make up stuff for a living! But, also that I can still have a life- I'm also a student, travel, have three adorable fluffballs, am looking to start volunteering again, friends, family, and am starting some freelance work. So, writing allows the flexibility to do that. Plus, it's something that I love and have been doing since I was a kid.
Where can people find out more about you and your writing?
Google or twitter. My twitter handle is @Cait_Morrigan.
Who is you favorite character in your book and why?
Cassandra Crowley. She is an incredibly strong woman and I modeled her off of myself. She uses her strengths to overcome difficult times and isn't conventional in many ways. She's a lot like me in a lot of ways but, also is different. This will be more apparent in the next book “Kissing Miss Turner”.
Why do you think readers are going to enjoy your book?
I feel that it has a strong message and is thought-provoking.
How long did it take you to write your book?
About a year
Who designed the cover?
I did!
Did you learn anything from writing your book that was unexpected?
Not really.
How do you research your books?
It depends on the book. Google is pretty helpful. But, “Black and White” is the first in a series and the character is very athletic in the series so, I'm trying to amp up my workout routine a bit (keep hiking and swimming, but adding in some new things as well). As crazy as it sounds, my Cassandra Crowley series is inspiring me to get in shape!
However, a lot of it is based on my life. My character is a rape and stalking survivor, world traveler, and either bisexual. I am also an openly bisexual woman, a world traveler, and rape and stalking survivor. She lost her parents, I lost a parent. She has tattoos, I have tattoos. The list goes on! A lot of my books are based loosely on real people and events- although a bit exaggerated.
What is your work in progress? Tell us about it.
I have a few. Follow me on Twitter and you will know when it's done.
What are your thoughts on self-publishing verses traditional publishing?
I prefer self-publishing. It is quicker, easier, and there is less overall bullshit to deal with.
Who or what inspired you to become a writer?
Honestly, it was something that I always wanted to do.
Does your family support you in your writing career? How?
Absolutely-for my mom, at least! I'm a student and still live at home. I recently started doing some freelance work as well and quit my part time job as a waitress. I'm planning on moving out after graduation and she's always been my number one cheerleader for about 95% of my goals. Most of my extended family doesn't really seem to have much of an opinion on it and some probably won't be too thrilled. But, a lot of my friends think it's awesome as well!
What are you currently reading?
“Men Who Hate Women and Women Who Kick Their Asses” by Donna King
What books or authors have most influenced your life?
“The Hunger Games”, “The Great Gatsby”, and “Harry Potter” are some of my favorites. But, I'm an incredibly avid reader in general.
When you’re not writing, how do you spend your time?
Sleeping! Haha. I enjoy hiking, volunteering with animals, cooking, hunting down new restaurants with awesome gluten free and vegetarian food, hanging out with friends and my fluffballs (cat, chinchilla, and guinea pig), going on adventures, traveling (I've been to around twenty-six countries), salsa dancing, walking my neighbor's dog, watching Netflix, reading, and picking up new hobbies. I like learning new things in general. However, I'm also a full time student and am looking to do some freelance translation (I speak French and Spanish) and freelance writing. So, I don't have much time in general!
