If you want to be successful you need to lay the foundations. For us writers that means creating quality content based on the needs of our target market.
The process can basically be broken down in to 4 main sections:
Plan
The better you plan the easier it will be for you to become successful. By creating a detailed plan that answers what, when, why, and how you want to achieve your goals will give you focus and make it easier to reach them.
Plan for a successful writing career. Plan for a successful book launch. Build a marketing plan that's broken down into author branding activities and promotional activities.
Having a guideline of what you need to do will stop you from going off track and keep you concentrated on what you need to do to be successful.
Research
The more you know the better. Research the writing industry, publishing industry and marketing strategies. Check out your competition and identify people that are doing what you want to be doing. How are they doing it?
Write
To be a successful writer you need to write. The more you write the better you'll become at writing. You'll also build a stronger personal style. Write, write and then write some more. After all practice makes perfect.
Market
No one will buy your book if they don't know it exists. Marketing is part of being a writer. Whether you traditionally publish or self publish you'll need to spend time marketing. Understanding marketing strategies and being able to implement them will help rocket you to success.
To build a foundation for success in this business you need all these elements. It's not enough to just write. When you combine planning, research, writing and marketing together and add the all important "believe in yourself" factor you have created the foundation for success.
Obviously you still need to work hard and be consistent in your efforts in order to achieve success but by setting the foundations you'll be off on the right foot.
