Video is big news and an excellent way for authors to reach their target audience. Think about it, more than 1 billion unique users visit YouTube each month. That's a HUGE audience for your content. YouTube is the most famous but there are many other video sharing sites out there too.
So how can authors use video for marketing?
Here's a few ideas to get you started:
1) Interviews
Video interviews can take several forms. You could ask your fans to send in questions and then film yourself answering them. You could do a live Google+ hangout (these can be live streamed to your YouTube channel and shared/embedded on other sites). Invite people to join the hangout and ask their questions. You could get someone to ask you some questions in a face to face interview and record it (hangouts is also a great way to do one on one interviews).
2) Panel discussions
Put together a group of authors in your niche and do a panel discussion.
3) Behind the scenes
Give some background on the step by steps of how your book was created.
4) Special offer and announcements
Let your followers know your latest news and offers.
5) Testimonials
If you collaborated with an illustrator, cover designer, editor etc... for your book give them a shout out.
6) Create a book trailer... or several
Give viewers a teaser of what your book is about and/or give a more detailed look inside the book to spark interest. Maybe do a series of trailers? Ever notice how some companies use a few different ads on TV as part of their campaign? It could work for your book too.
7) Sample readings
Film yourself or some else reading an excerpt from your book.
8) Share your best reviews
Read your best review comments. Maybe showing some screenshots of them posted to Amazon or blogs. Even better get fans to send you a quick video of them reviewing your book.
9) FAQ's
Put together a list of FAQ's about your book or stuff about your life as a writer and either do a video session where you answer them all or do individual videos for each one.
10) On the go
Attending a writers conference or doing a book signing or other in person event? Film the event (or get some else to film you at the event).
