Why reading is important

We all know that being able to read is a useful skill to have but with all the other distractions on offer picking up a book is often moved to the bottom of our to-do list. Reading is however important for both children and adults and especially important for people in the writing industry.

"Children might frequently ask why reading is important and it is imperative that their questions are answered.  Children should be exposed to reading from the womb; however reading must be more to children than a time of fun and enjoyment.  They must have an appreciation for the fact that reading is a skill that they should endeavor to master for the rest of their lives.  Thought they should never think that reading is boring, they should understand and accept the fact that reading is a skill that will require practice and diligence.  When asked why reading is important they should have the understanding that reading is the key to unlocking their future success". - Quoted from http://www.whyreadingisimportant.com/ a great site packed with interesting posts all on the topic of reading.

To list all the reasons why reading is important would take more than just this post but a few are; keeps the mind healthy, develops your creative side and increases your knowledge.

“A capacity and taste for reading gives access to whatever has already been discovered by others" - Abraham Lincoln

“Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.”  - Sir Richard Steele

"A library is a hospital for the mind" -  Anonymous

  1. Reading helps to boost the imagination - which in turn allows us to write imaginative, magical, and sometimes life-changing stories. :)

    Thought provoking post!

  2. Someone just sent me a quote that fits right in with this post: "Reading makes immigrants of us all. It takes us away from home, but more important, it finds homes for us everywhere."
    — Jean Rhys

I read because it's life, because my life would shrink to a teeny speck without the wide open horizons of the written page, and, well, because it's just so darn much fun. :)
