What are you doing to grow your author brand?
As an adventure travel writer I love to
travel and spend time writing about my explorations. I also love sharing Wai-nani, A Voice from Old Hawai’i with book clubs, but I cannot be
available for Skype meet-ups. Brief video clips answering the most common
questions I receive from readers about my book seemed a very good answer to
this dilemma. To this end I created an
introductory video explaining why I felt the need for a second edition that
directs them to my video playlist.
In the story I weave myth, legend, and
actual historical incidents that raises the question in the minds of readers
“What is True?” In this clip I address
this very important question.
Each of the thirteen clips I created answer
specific questions about the Hawaiian culture. For instance, the death of
Captain James Cook at the hands of the Islanders has long been a controversial
topic in Hawaiian history, so I presented my position on the matter.
It
is my hope that sharing in this way readers will not only come away with a
better understanding of the ancient Hawaiian culture, but that they it will
give readers a more personal connection with me. It is my hope that people
will find my videos about Wai-nani,
entertaining and informative and will share them with friends!
YouTube is a great way of building your author brand and marketing your books. Not only one of the world's most popular social media sites, YouTube is also one of the top method's of search.

When it comes to creating content online, video is as close to in-person as you can get, and has proved to be a highly effective marketing tool. Marketing experts around the world agree that video is big news and regularly offer reasons why you should be creating video content. I'm going to assume that you've already been told that video can be a powerhouse and move on to how you can promote your online videos. After all, it's not enough to just upload a video to YouTube. You need people to watch it too.
This infographic gives some good tips for promoting your online videos, but first let me list some of the take away points raised:
1) Don't forget about SEO. Add a keyword rich description and tags to your video to help it show up better in search results.
2) Send the video link to people you think might be interested in it. If you have an email list or newsletter use them to let people know about your content.
3) Include a call to action. Video is another form of social media and the more likes, comments, and shares your video gets the more viral it will become. Ask viewers for feedback and get them talking about your video.
4) Embed your videos on your blog. Most of you probably have an author website or blog (if you don't, why not?) and therefore have the perfect channel already in place for sharing your video content. Video makes for an easy blog post too as you can just embed it using the code from YouTube. A quick intro or follow up and your post is done.
5) Share your video on your other social media sites and widen your reach. Tweet it, pin it, post it to Facebook and/or Google+... This is also a great opportunity to cross promote your various profiles and let your fans know they can find you on other sites too. It makes a nice break from just written posts too and gives your followers a bit of variety.
6) Check your stats. Learn what's working and what's not so you can improve your marketing plan and get better results in the future.

I came across this video on Youtube and although it was posted back in 2012 it gives a great run down on how to make good Youtube videos. If you're new to video content creation or need some new ideas for video content this should help.
I love how he gives simple, clear, examples of each point he's making.

Whilst a lot of authors consider doing a virtual book tour (VBT) when they launch their book many forget that they can be a great way for putting new life into older publications too. In this video I answer the question "How many times can you VBT the same book?"

Storify is a great tool for building a transcript of your live Twitter interviews or for pulling together related tweets. It's completely free to use and user friendly.

Here's the embed of a transcript I made using Storify for a Twitter interview I did recently. as you can see all the tweets are active and so can be retweeted, added to your favourites, and replied to directly from here. You can also follow the participants of the chat by clicking on the follow buttons on each tweet. To read all the post all you need to do is scroll down using the scroll bar on the right.
Storify also gives you the option of sharing and embedding the whole transcript by using the icons on the top right of the chat.

This is the first in a series of author interviews for the Writers and Author TV channel. In this video I chat with author +Susie Caron about her children's book series 'Between You and Me'.
Author bio:
Susie E. Caron, private practice
psychotherapist, speaker and author of Twee', developed her "Between You
and Me" series through years of experience working with children and
families. Susie taught elementary school and adult education. She also owned
and instructed in a horsemanship riding school. Susie closed the school when
Fibromyalgia interrupted her work. Undaunted, she returned to graduate school
to fulfill an earlier dream. In 2002, Susie began her career as a
psychotherapist treating children and families in northwestern Vermont.
Susie's writing
began early in childhood and continued throughout her life. However, multiple
life events, which included a late diagnosis of Rheumatoid Arthritis, put off
her publishing debut. In 2013, Susie released her first book, the allegory,
Twee', in picture book format. Susie states, "A well illustrated allegory
offers numerous interpretations for all ages." She adds, "In all my
work, I create an awareness, that how we know ourselves impacts the way we
relate to others and to our purpose." Susie is happily married and lives
in Vermont
with her husband, two riding horses and one affectionate, bouncy Boxer.
Twitter chats or Tweet Chats are a great way to reach a large target audience on Twitter. As all the tweets can be retweeted it can also be a great way to send your message viral and help establish yourself as an expert in your niche.
Live Twitter interviews are done using a hashtag which is attached to all the tweets. This makes it easy for people to follow and also allows people to find all the posts quickly as they can just do a search for the hashtag and it'll bring up all the posts from the chat.
Yesterday I was interviewed in a Tweet Chat as part of my virtual book tour to promote my latest release Virtual Book Tours: Effective Online Book Promotion From the Comfort of Your Own Home, where I shared loads of tips about virtual book tours. As I was preparing for the interview I decided to do a quick how to video to show how to do a live Twitter chat. I also show some of the tools I use to make doing them super easy.

There is a playlist that showcases the video book trailers of Writers and Authors members and more playlists will be added in the near future.
